Our Hour, from Greater Public

Greater Public empowers and inspires local public media leaders and practitioners around the country to elevate the financial sustainability of their organizations. They also empower public media development practitioners through useful, practical and actionable information.

In the fall of 2020, Greater Public chose to work with The Pink Librarian to develop the branding for a new branch within their organization—Our Hour, a monthly digital gathering to promote conversations within the BIPOC community in public media.

Looking into cultural diversity for inspiration and Direction

Along with looking at the logo designs of other public radio programs, stations, etc. for reference as to the aesthetic of the market in general, we also looked at the art of different cultures—primarily textile prints—and noticed a similar use of circles throughout. With consideration to Greater Public’s logo (as well as to our market research), we decided to use the same font for ‘Our Hour’.

By right justifying the words and stacking them atop one another, we were able to not only emphasis the repetition of letters but have the two Os appear atop one another—creating the foundation for an iconic design within the logotype.

The Os within the logotype now appears as circles.

  • Simplistically, they can be seen as representing:

  • Time / day and night (Or, KO, night and day)

  • Individuals creating a whole

  • a Colon

...and pay homage to the patterns of circles seen across a variety of cultures the world over.

We are stronger together than we are alone

The pattern for the background below is made of circles in colors representing a variety of skin tones. The circles appear atop, or interlocked with, one another to create a whole (and yet may still be seen as individuals circles).

The pattern has the flexibility to be used horizontally, vertically, and/or rearranged to blend in a variety of ways. The colors may even be edited down to a fewer number of tones and the overall patten would still retain its symbolism.
